Technical Specifications

Halogen-free PCBs address the growing regulatory and environmental demand for electronics manufactured without bromine or chlorine-based flame retardants. XinAn PCB produces halogen-free boards from 1 to 8 layers using specialized FR-4 grade laminates where bromine content is below 900ppm and chlorine below 900ppm, with total halogen content under 1500ppm per IEC 61249-2-21. These boards comply fully with RoHS, REACH, and the EU WEEE directive, and they are increasingly mandated by OEMs in consumer electronics, automotive, and medical device sectors pursuing green product certifications. Our halogen-free product line delivers equivalent electrical and mechanical performance to standard FR-4 while eliminating the toxic gas emission risks associated with halogenated materials during combustion or disposal.

Halogen-Free Material Technology

Halogen-free laminates replace traditional DBBP (decabromodiphenyl) flame retardants with phosphorus-nitrogen based systems that achieve UL 94V-0 ratings through intumescent char formation rather than gas-phase radical quenching. The most common halogen-free resin systems use reactive phosphorus compounds copolymerized into the epoxy backbone, maintaining Tg values of 150-175°C and Td (decomposition temperature) above 340°C. We stock halogen-free laminates from multiple qualified suppliers with Dk values of 4.2-4.6 at 1GHz and Df below 0.015, making them suitable for controlled impedance applications up to moderate frequencies. Prepreg resin content and flow characteristics differ from standard FR-4, requiring adjusted lamination pressure profiles—typically 15-20% higher peak pressure—to achieve proper fill and bond strength between layers.

Processing Considerations and Design Impact

Halogen-free materials process similarly to standard FR-4 with several notable adjustments. Drill bit life is typically 10-15% shorter due to the higher filler content in phosphorus-based resin systems, requiring more frequent bit changes on high-hole-count designs. Desmear chemistry requires modified permanganate concentrations and dwell times to properly clean through-hole walls without over-etching the resin. Solder mask adhesion on halogen-free substrates benefits from a light mechanical scrub or plasma treatment prior to mask application. From a design perspective, halogen-free laminates exhibit slightly higher moisture absorption (0.15-0.25% vs. 0.10-0.15% for standard FR-4), which can affect high-frequency signal integrity in humid environments. Designers should specify adequate bake-out procedures before assembly—typically 4 hours at 120°C for boards thicker than 2.0mm—to prevent moisture-induced delamination during reflow.

Regulatory Compliance and Certifications

Our halogen-free PCBs are manufactured under a documented compliance management system covering material qualification, incoming inspection, process segregation, and outgoing verification. Every laminate lot is accompanied by supplier certificates of conformance confirming halogen content per IEC 61249-2-21 testing (ion chromatography method). We maintain UL recognition for halogen-free constructions under our existing UL file, with flame ratings verified per UL 94 at the thinnest approved construction. For customers in the EU market, we provide material declarations compatible with SCIP database submissions and full substance disclosure per IEC 62474. Automotive customers receive IMDS (International Material Data System) entries for each unique board construction. Our halogen-free boards carry Sony SS-00259 Green Partner equivalence and comply with Apple's Regulated Substances Specification where required.

Applications Driving Halogen-Free Adoption

Consumer electronics OEMs—particularly smartphone, tablet, and laptop manufacturers—have driven the mainstream adoption of halogen-free PCBs since 2010. Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi now mandate halogen-free substrates across their supply chains. Beyond consumer electronics, the automotive industry's shift toward halogen-free aligns with ELV (End of Life Vehicle) directive targets, with IATF 16949-certified board shops increasingly required to offer halogen-free as a standard option. Medical devices benefit from halogen-free construction to eliminate toxicological risk during device disposal or incineration. Server and networking equipment manufacturers specify halogen-free boards for data center installations where fire safety codes restrict halogenated materials in enclosed spaces. XinAn PCB ships halogen-free boards across all these segments with identical lead times to our standard FR-4 production.
